Fred Matiangi: A Soft-Spot in Succession

I might be wrong, but I opines that, the career academician turned technocrat, born in Borabu, Nyamira County, Dr Fred Matiangi, featured prominently in Uhuru and Raila secret summitry that borne “handshake”.

I say soft-spot because of what happened on July 30, 2021, at Raila’s Karen residence where he convened a meeting to patch-up a wedge between Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi and Kisii Governor James Ongwae. The meeting, which was also attended by Kisii Senator Sam Ongeri, MP Janet Ongera and Suna East MP Junet Muhamed brokered a truce after a bitter fallout following the Bonchari by-election which ODM’s Pavel Oimeke won.

This was to save guard the events that started in February this year [2021], that thrust Fred Matiangi on the path to occupy the leadership mantle left by former Cabinet Minister Simeon Nyachae, where the Gusii Council of Elders and section of politicians from the region endorsed him as the undisputed kingpin for community awaiting to be crowned as a community elder.

Another soft-spot can be seen in President Uhuru. There is no doubt that he is first among equas in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Cabinet after he was appointed coordinator of government business in the Cabinet. Under the National Development Implementation and Communication Cabinet Committee, Matiangi is tasked to oversee the delivery and oversight of national government development programmes and harmonization in implementation especially Competency Based Curriculum [CBC], noting it will take post Uhuru term to mature hence, with the zeal Matiangi showed in it infancy can attempt Uuru to endorse him as his preferred successor.
