A portion of my plot of land is in lowland with some depression that becomes waterlogged after heavy downpour thus enabling denitrification. Denitrification occurs where oxygen content is low giving anaerobic bacteria conducive environment to reduce nitrate ions in sequence into gas hence denying crop plants vital nutrients. And in the process. Waterlogged water surrounding the crop’s roots become dilute more than water in the crop tissues effecting hyper-tonic solution; the external water potential is more negative than the water potential of the cell. Water leaves the cell and, because the cell wall is rigid, the cell membranes shrinks away from the cell wall. This process is termed plasmolysis and the cell becomes flaccid. Full plasmolysis is irreversible-the cell cannot recover by taking up water so it dies.
