Sedentary lifestyle predisposed me to contract diabetes mellitus-a metabolic disease. Diabetes mellitus [From Greek ; sweet urine] is a disease caused by basically a deficiency of insulin secretion or by the secretion of abnormal insulin. It is characterized by very high levels of blood glucose [300-1000 mg per 100 ml blood], resulting from inability of glucose to enter into cells. This level of blood glucose is above the renal threshold [reabsorption capacity of kidneys] of 180 mg per 100 ml blood. The result is that glucose is excreted in urine as you can see on my lab test [Glucose +++], a condition called glucosuria.
Excretion of glucose is accompanied by a high frequency of urination [polyuria] and excessive thirst leading to intake of large volumes of water. Polyuria occurs because the kidneys have to excrete the excess glucose with a relatively large amount of water since their capacity to concentrate urine has an upper limit.
Lack of glucose in cells leads to an abnormality in general energy metabolism. The cells revert to excessive oxidation of fatty acids for energy production. This leads to the formation of acidic compounds called ketone [Ketone + on my lab test above] bodies in the liver. The ketone bodies are shed into the bloodstream and may lead to a disruption of the acid-base balance in the body. In untreated diabetes mellitus blood pH may fall to a limit, such a drop in blood pH my lead to coma and death. My fortunate was prompt intervention by medication but now am in remission off drug after successfully absolving my diet.
