If Jesus was ordinary child, it could have contracted tetanus. For was born and placed in tetanus conducive environment. Tetanus is a neurological disorder caused by a toxin produced by clostridium tetani a single celled [unicellular] tetanus bacilli.
Normally, tetanus bacilli live in bowels of animals [and human]. When the bacilli are passed out in faeces, they form spores in order to survive the harsh conditions outside. Therefore, tetanus spores may be present in any soil contaminated by faeces, particularly of cows.
A special and very important form of tetanus is seen in the newborn. It is called tetanus neonatorum, and it is nearly fatal, even with the best kind of treatment. After birth, blood stops flowing through the umbilical cord. The cord becomes necrotic, dries up and falls off in a few days giving route for tetanus bacilli to infect the child if on vicinity of cows dung. Many of the newborns with clinical tetanus will 60-80% even when the nursing care is excellent.
Tetanus of the newborn can be prevented by active immunization of the mother during pregnancy. Usually 2 injections of tetanus toxoid are given 4 weeks apart. The first one must be given at the first visit to the antenatal clinic.
