Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta were having negotiations for a free trade agreement [FTA] with United States’ President Donald Trump, through Atlantic Council: a non-patisan organization that galvanizes US global leadership and engagement in partnership with allies and partners.
That pursuit has been criticized by some African countries who have signed the African Continental Free Trade Agreement [AfCFTA] and those of the East African Community bloc who suspected that it was Trump’s skewed machinations to ruins their efforts through Kenya.
President Kenyatta, however, sought to counter that fears that the trade talks will undermine the AfCTA, stating that they will instead assist the continent by creating a reference point from which other African nations will negotiate bilateral arrangements within the continental framework hoping US President-elect, Joe Biden will take the same cue.
