Orange Democratic Movement [ODM] Secretary-General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, mounted a spirited defense of the former president Uhuru Kenyatta at former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo’s burial on December 30, 2025 for his political arithmetic in my view :
At the burial, Mr Sifuna drew loud applause when he apologized to Uhuru for insults directed at him by some ODM leaders, acknowledging Uhuru’s role in supporting Raila Odinga. “Today, they want to cut off the hand that fed them. Because the party has both wise and foolish members, I want, on behalf of the foolish ones, to apologize for the insults directed at you. If there was ever a day the ODM party did not say thank you, today I want to say, as Secretary-General of ODM, thank you for standing by Baba,” said Mr Sifuna.
Here is votes arithmetic that I opine Mr Sifuna is calculating based on Uhuru’s political hand. In 2017 general election, with ODM party, Mr Sifuna polled 674,056 votes [42.51%] against winner Johnson Sakaja who got 811,826 votes [51.20%] with Uhuru’s Jubilee Party.
In the 2022 general election, Mr Sifuna once again contested the Nairobi Senatorial seat with ODM in Azimio Coalition headed by Uhuru. He garnered 716,876 to clinch the seat, beating his main competitor Bishop Margaret Wanjiru of the United Democratic Alliance [UDA] who got 524,091 votes. It worthy to note here that Bishop Margaret Wanjiru was also beaten by Mr Mike Sonko of Uhuru’s Jubilee Party in 2013 general election where she garnered 525,822 votes against sonko’s 808,705 votes. From this so far Nairobi’s senatorial wins trend, one can deduce why Mr Sifuna is kin not to antagonize the former president Uhuru Kenyatta.
