While doing beat at my maize farm to check on my specific maize plant which am experimenting with on thinning benefits, I found it on silking period. The male and female flowers of maize are borne on separate inflorescences but on the same plant. The male inflorescence, the tassel, is borne at the terminal end of the stem. The female inflorescence, the ear, on the other hand, is borne in the axil of one of the foliage leaves about mid-way along the stem. Though so, maize is cross-pollinated by wind.
The fruit, sometimes known as the ‘kernel’ or ‘grain’ or ‘seed’, is a caryopsis which ripens within 2 months of fertilization. Meaning, now being June, by September I will harvesting.
