In my course of duty, I stumbled a house in state of unequal settlement. With unequal settlement, a building displaces subsoil in an uniform manner, thus destabilizing the building and creating differential resting positions. The effect of unequal settlement may be evidenced by gaping cracks on walls, distortion of door and window openings, walls thrown out of the vertical and collapse of buildings.
This scenario occur when architecture overlook site investigation to ascertain the type of soil in relation to the building being put up. This is done by taking soil samples at various positions on the site to test; bearing capacity of the soil, ultimate bearing capacity and safe bearing capacity of the soil.
